I am getting some relief from AZO. How long can you take it? I remember you could take the Pyridium for some time and I would use it when I was in a flare.
Have had IC for ten years and was doing ok, but now I seem to have gone backwards to where I started. What is used to sleep? I also get weekley Herpirn instills. My nurse mentioned using Elmior instead, any thoughts?
Thanks for the kind people who are there when you really need them.

You need to stay within the package instructions until you can talk with your doctor.

      Azo

I was at the urologist today. They said that since I already knew what condition I had that it would be ok to use it more.
I also received samples of Uribel. As I remember you said you used it. I had a heparin instill which has helped in the past, but I see no relieve today. I tried the Uribel and am having terrible burning. I am taking a new drug for IBS I wonder if this could be bothering my bladder?

I don't know if it is the drug for IBS, maybe your PCP or whoever prescribed the drug can answer that? Did you look it up and see what is exactly in it?

I do know that when my IBS flares up, my IC is really bad and yes, I do get really bad urethra burning.

          IBS Med

It is Dicyclomine which has Hydroxhloride in it. It is supposed to relax the colon so my GI said that it might even help the bladder. This is the first time I have ever had IBS so don't know how long I need to stay on this medication. I might try to stop tomorrow and stay with the Uribel and see if I get any relief.

How effective is Azo? I've read a lot of comments saying that they take it but it's quite expensive, so wanted to know how effective it would be before ordering?

I find it very effective if I have eatten something which is making my bladder burn it will stop it. The box says to take 2 but I find I can usally just take one and it does the trick, depending on what I ate I may have to take one more later in the day.

I think it is worth the money. but everyone is different.

I just bought some Azo Extra Strength (although the mg was the same as the normal stuff? Hmm) and it was only $8.99 for 30 pills. The box says to take no more than 3 doses in a 24 hour period, so you could in theory take it with breakfast, lunch and dinner. I've been taking it twice a day...once in the morning and once after dinner and that's plenty for me.

Also, beware, they really hurt my stomach if I don't eat (a lot) first. I can't take it unless I have a full meal first.

The box says to not take it longer than a few days without consulting your doctor. I've been taking it for 7 days in a row but I'm trying to not take it today. I know that my urologist said it was okay to take as needed, but that was 6 years ago. The box says that there has been no long term testing.

IC acting back up after a severe UTI in June followed by another mild UTI in August.

                Current Treatment
~IC diet - not strict, but avoiding most things including my beloved soy chai lattes. Drinking only water and blueberry juice. No tomatoes or anything spicey.
~1/2-1mg Ativan per day - has been the only thing to help! Praying that my doctor will let me continue with it
                ~25mg Doxipen
~Azo as needed (don't really notice a difference)

IC symptoms get progressively worse throughout the day. Sleep and constant distraction are my only refuge!

                  AZO for relief

The reason why AZO OTC says to only use it for 2 days is because it is marketed to persons who might have a UTI, and is intended to provide relief only until those people are able to get to their doctor and get tested for a UTI (so that they can get proper treatment, and not just symptom relief, as a UTI is in an infection that requires antibiotic treatment.)

HOWEVER the drug in "AZO" is essentially the same as prescription Pyridium, which can be prescribed for relief of symptoms for months. My brother's uro prescribed Pyridium for him for many months. If it helps you, let your Dr or nurse know that. I was taking AZO over the counter for *ages* before I even discovered that I had IC.

                    Hi,

Are you still using azo? I just found something that works, but scared to take it after reading comments here,

                    Thanks

                      Re: AZO for relief

Lisa, it is still important to talk to your physician about taking it long term. I eventually became sick every time I took it. I save it for when I can't stand it anymore. But, I still have nausea.

Are you watching your diet and taking any other medications???
