  • Uta acidifys the urine?????

I had my second weekly instill yesterday with heparin/kenalog/lidocaine. They gave me a few samples of UTA because I complained about increased urethral burning after last weeks intill. I woke up at 5:00am with a bad flare. I am afraid to try the UTA since I read that it acidifys the urine. I am always trying to alkalize my urine. Has anyone had any problems with UTA?
I have basically done every treatment for IC except cyclosporine and botox. Everything has failed. I live on pain meds all day. My diet is so strict that I now have multiple vitamin deficiencies. I have also tried numerous alternative therapies. I would do a cystectomy, but doctors seem to think living in pain is better. Currently taking Synthroid, Elmiron, Percocet, Toradol, Desert Harvest aloe. Interstim done 4 times, what a waste. Also newly diagnosed with Hunners Ulcers on cysto. Now disabled due to IC. A body of life, a bladder of hell.

UTA contains medications that help soothe the bladder.

OK.... I broke down and took a UTA around 1030 today, could not take the pain anymore. It did help some, but made me stoned and had a horrible dry mouth. Maybe since I take Enablex at night, the side effects of the UTA were worse for me. I will take another right before bed tonight, to try to buy some sleep. I start a new job on Thurs, so need to be in better shape.

I've been afraid of Prosed DS for the same reason. The problem is that those meds were made mostly for people with UTIs or are recovering from them. They contain an ingredient that helps acidify the urine because that makes the bladder a less hospitable place for the bacteria. It helps prevent the bacteria from sticking to the bladder walls. And it's the same reason why people drink cranberry juice for a UTI (it's acidity). Anyway, I know there are a lot of people on here who take UTA and Prosed with no problems but some do have trouble with them so... like everything else in IC World, it's trial and error. I did try Prosed once at the very beginning of my symptoms and experienced a slight burning sensation in my bladder so I stopped. It could've been the med or something entirely different but I won't know until I try it again. Hope that helps!

Also, I don't know if Enablex would interact with UTA because I've never taken either of them but just wanted to say please be careful when combining meds. I have to be careful with mine because their effects can be amplified when taken together. I take Vesicare, which is an anticholinergic (anti-spasm) drug (same as Enablex) and Elavil which also has anticholinergic effects. So always ask a pharmacist or doc if you can combine certain meds.

UTA works great for me. I have never had any problem at all except for the expense, but even that is worth it for the relief it gives me. My urologist gave it to me for IC and it works better if you take it regularly for several days rather than one here and there. But you may not be able to tolerate it, I don't know. It's been a lifesaver for me.
          treatment:
-I follow the IC diet to the letter
          -acupuncture and chinese herbs
          -Prelief
          -UTA
          -instillations as needed
-beginning yoga and specialized yoga for breathing and relaxation
          -Wellbutrin
          -Klonopin

          main symptoms: pain and burning
