  • Why has the price of Elmiron increased

I have been reading the posts in which people in the USA can not afford to purchase Elmiron. Why has the price increased so dramatically? It is outrageous considering that the USA is a wealthy country. Why are so many people left to suffer; this upsets me. I live in the UK and up until recently Elmiron was an unlicensed drug, but the NHS were still able to prescribe the drug. The NHS state the price of medication on all packaging and currently the NHS pay £132 for a month’s supply of Elmiron. The USA really needs an NHS. It is not a perfect system but a fair system which ensures an equal system ( no discrimination) for everyone.

The drug companies increase their prices because they CAN !!! I agree 100% that we need more accessible health care in the United States.

This country is rich but there are plenty of problems in the usa. If you don't have your health in this country it can be a nightmare. Good luck getting health care and money for disability if your sick. It can be stressful and a difficult road to navigate. I"m sure it would be in any country. I so regret not having my full health that I previously had. I wish this did not happen to me.

Elmiron went off patent several years ago and is now eligible for generic manufacturers to come in and make. Thats when the prices took a dramatic upswing. I think what Jannsen Pharma has done is to raise the price as much as they can to get as much profit as they can until the generic comes out. Unfortunately, we don't have a date for that. A company in India, Swati Spentose, has been making a generic for years that is available pretty much everywhere but the USA. To be approved here in our country they must go through very expensive research studies. I was told that they would have to replicate the original studies to prove that their products work. It's probably just too expensive for them to do. :::sigh:::

I know how dibilitating this disease and without Elmiron I would not be able to work full-time. It saddens me that drug companies are enabled to exploit poor, sick people. I know Trump and the media portray the NHS as I bad terrible system, where people are left to suffer. This is completely untrue. We can see a GP on the same day: we can walk in emergency at a hospital and get treated: we have routine checks for cervix and breast cancer etc: yes, there are waiting lists for to operations and you have to wait to see a consultant unless it is serious. However, in the past if I wanted to see a consultant within a few days they usually cost about £150 for a private consultation and then they will put you in on their NHS for any further appointments etc. Presently, I have an elderly friend (80 years old) who has been in hospital for the last 2 weeks due to having pneumonia. Whilst he has been there they have discovered he has a heart problem and needs a pace maker; he is having the operation today. As I said previously the NHS is not perfect but I do believe that if we lost the NHS, that would be the downfall of our country. The majority of the UK do not want to loose the NHS and most would be willing to pay extra taxes to improve the system. I hope that one day health care will be different in the USA and you have a system which is equal and no-one regardless of wealth, disabilty, race and age is left to suffer.

Thank- you for taking time Jill and Donna for your explanation. I have been using this site for 9 years and it has provided me with me with vast knowledge. I found out about Elmiron on this site. At first my consultant was reluctant to prescribe it because of the cost. However, eventually he did on a named basis because it was unlicensed. I only just found out that it recently became licensed in this country. I am not sure why - drug company deal??

Just remember to have your eyes examined regularly if you are using Elmiron. Our preliminary patient survey is showing that about half of patients using it are showing some eye issues - https://www.ic-network.com/long-term...tinal-disease/
