  • Just started Elmiron...

I was wondering about something... sorry if this is too much information...

I just started Elmiron a few days ago (3 pills am/noon/pm). With taking it on an empty stomach, it makes me nautious and I belch more. I also have minor GI upset, but no diarrhea (at least not yet!). I do have more gas though... and it doesn't smell like roses. I eat a very healthy diet, I pass so little gas normally and this is upsetting me!

I was wondering if these things go away as my body gets used to the drug? I haven't noticed shedding... and I really hope I don't have that!

Any help, advice, or personal stories would be really appreciated.

Well, I've been on elmiron for three weeks. The first week I had nausea and a headache. However, for me, both of those subsided after a couple of weeks. I don't notice any belching or increased flatulence. I was afraid that my hair was falling out, but I realized that I haven't lost more hair than I usually lose. Crossing my fingers that it stays that way!

Here's hoping it's a magic drug for both of us!

Many ICers have discovered that it's the capsule that's the problem. You might try emptying the capsule into a small amount of water and taking it that way (discard the empty capsule).

I had nausea the first few days on Elmiron, but it went away shortly after as my body adjusted to the drug.

        Diagnosed August 2001

Current IC meds: Elmiron (since 2001), Levaquin (one pill after intercourse to prevent UTIs), Effexor (for depression & anxiety)

Past IC meds: Amitriptyline (Elavil), Hydroxyzine (Vistaril), Detrol LA, Lexapro (for depression & anxiety, but also helped my IC) (They all helped, but I was able to discontinue them.)

I've been virtually symptom free and able to eat & drink whatever I'd like for about 8 years now.

          Elmiron

I had been on this for over a month and since I have no insurance I can't get into the doctor right now to see him and get more. I did feel bloated and gassy when I first started them, along with the nausa. My obgyn once told me if it continuted to give me a problem with the nasusa and the feeling of being gassy all the time, I know this sounds so gross, but it does it me,but he said you can insert these capsels in your bladder. I have not gone back to him to see how this is done, but he says it works better for some people since it is inserted right there and desolves faster and starts to work. I worry however about having to pee before it dissolves since I go so much. I have gotten so used to it and the symtoms have gone away, and now I am in the postion of not getting some, however I am going to see about Johnson and Johnson how much they can help me out of perscribsion. I wish you luck on all these things dissapearing.

I'm glad that you don't have the gas... not a nice side effect! It's nice to know that your headache and nausea went away (have that too).

I hope it helps us both! I wish it wouldn't take so long to know, but I'll give it time!

It's funny you mention that. I can't swallow pills most of the time, but Wednesday and Thursday morning and afternoon I was able to. I suppose it could have worked its way to my GI tract by Friday and gave me all that gas. I'm back to breaking open all my pills (or crushing) and we'll see if that is the answer!

              Thank you so much!

Lori, I hope you can get more pills before your symptoms return. I would be afraid to put anything up the urethra because I urinate so much, but also, I'd be afraid to introduce an infection... like I need that too!

I'll see if breaking the capsules is the answer... or maybe it will fade in time!
