  • Elmiron and SSRI Anti-depressants

Hey, I know a lot of people on the board take anti-depressants. I take Elmiron (100 mg 3x/day), I have really low blood pressure, and I started taking Lexapro a few days ago. The elmiron made me a little lightheaded, as it's a blood thinner, but now that I'm on the Lexapro too, it's making me REALLY light headed. I feel like I have to faint all the time, and I keep seeing spots. Does any one have suggestions for SSRI anti-depressants (taken for depression, not taken specifically to help IC) that work well with Elmiron? I was on celexa for a year before I had IC, maybe I need to try that because Lexapro doesn't seem to be working

I'd definitely talk to your doctor about the light headedness if you haven't already. I am on Elmiron and Lexapro and have pretty low blood pressure. I have light headedness every now and then, but it's infrequent and I don't know if it's related to the meds or not. I'd talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

    Diagnosed August 2001

Current IC meds: Elmiron (since 2001), Levaquin (one pill after intercourse to prevent UTIs), Effexor (for depression & anxiety)

Past IC meds: Amitriptyline (Elavil), Hydroxyzine (Vistaril), Detrol LA, Lexapro (for depression & anxiety, but also helped my IC) (They all helped, but I was able to discontinue them.)

I've been virtually symptom free and able to eat & drink whatever I'd like for about 8 years now.

I agree with Kim but I must say that I was put on a really low dose (10 mg) of Zoloft a couple of months ago. I have just stopped it though because my uro just put me on Elavil to help w/ the IC. When I first started taking the Zoloft it made me really lightheaded and just generally out of it. It was really annoying but went away in a week or less once my body got used to it. I have never had any problems with the Elmiron though.

I have been diagnoised for 6 1/2 years now. I have taken a long break from the ICN but really miss helping out my fellow IC patients and want to get back into posting.
1st hydro 4/07 showed no visible signs of IC but tons of mast cells in all my biopsy samples which did prove IC.
2nd hydro 4/13/09 showed dark purple glomerulations and I had a capacity of 450 cc's. This hydro proved that my IC had progressed.
I have tried every oral medication as well as rescue instills and DMSO.

I have been lucky enough to see Dr Hanno, the top IC specialist in PA who has told me due to the fact that I have not responded to any "standard" treatments that I have a severe, end stage case of IC with a horrible quality of life (didn't have to tell me that last part!)
