  • Elmiron and bladder infections

Does anyone know if Elmiron may actually reduce or stop bladder infections. I have had many infections until I was on Elmiron for many months. I was doing so good that my doctor said I could back off of 4 pills a day and eventually get off of it. I was off of Elmiron for about 2 weeks and I got an infection. So.....I am back on Elmiron--4 pills a day and doing great. I am so afraid to stop it again-or maybe someone has had this same problem and can give me some advice. I do really good on Elmiron-but I hate so many pills to take, but even worse I HATE INFECTIONS!!!!!
    Thanks

Did they actually culture and diagnose an infection? It sounds more like it could have been an IC flare. Elmiron isn't a medication that can usually be stopped. It offers temporary relief as long as it is taken, but when stopped, the benefit doesn't usually last.

The doctor did not actually grow a culture, he did a urine test and the results was puss in my bladder-which was the beginning of an infection. I took a round of Sulfer and got back on Elmiron and have not had any problems since.
I live in a one red light town--- and this doctor is not my IC doctor, so he doesn't know much about bladder problems. Was this correct for IC patients, was this the beginning of an infection or is this just IC letting itself be known?
I hate the thought of being on Elmiron for the rest of my life. I have done so good lately and very seldom do I have any pain or discomfort to even remind me that I have IC. I no longer have to take Elavil (which I could not live without) so hopefully I will be able to get off of Elmiron also.
