  • oxybutynin?

    Hi everyone,

not sure if I have posted in the correct place but was wondering if anyone had been given oxybutynin or the oxybutinin patch for frequency and urgency?

My doc believes most of my bladder problems are because of tight muscles, the bladder (being a muscles) contracts too frequently causing the frequency. The spasms cause the urgency. I have pain only if I eat something nasty or just before my period. I do not retain urine she did a test for that. She has given me this patch. my bladder holds 200ml of water before I feel I am about to burst open, she said at my age (22) this should be more like 400ml.

My urogyne is very experienced with ic (in the industry she is the doc to go to) and was just wondering about others experiences on this medication?

    Thanks

    Claire

I tried it but it did absolutely nothing for me in terms of symptom relief. I was taking the pills 3 times a day and all it did was make my mouth and throat so dry I could hardly even swallow. I know some have had a lot of success with the patch. That's Gelnique, right? I didn't even bother with that because I thought if the pills were so completely ineffective for me, the patch probably would be, too. I've had more success with vesicare and amiltriptyline but again, everyone is different.
Diagnosed with IC in April 2011. Medications and IC treatments did not help, diagnosed with PFD in September of 2013. Still searching for answers as to why I have never-ending frequency/urgency issues.

    Current medications/treatments:
Pelvic physical therapy, valium suppositories, b and o suppositories, acupuncture, probiotics, magnesium, epsom salt baths

    Previous medications/treatments:

The patch and the Gelnique gel are the same medications but have different delivery systems. The gel is rubbed into the skin once a day. The Gelnique worked for me with very little if any side effects other than a slightly dry mouth. I found it to be a little inconsistent though, and one day it would work really well and the next day just ok. My frequency was not that bad to begin with though so my results may be different than someone's with a higher frequency.

          Thanks for responses

          Thanks guys,

I am wearing the patch for the first time today. I have drank 3 and a half glasses of water (8oz) and have peed 3 times. I would have gone about 5 times by midday (this time) usually. I hope this indicates it will work. I went at 6.30 when I woke then didnt need to go again untill 11am!

Would hate to have to resort to instills. I am scared this is mild for now but will get worse with time. Is this usually the case?

          Thanks,

          Claire

Earth lady - are you using a different medication at the moment. If so why did you discontinue the Gelnique??

I don't use an OAB med now. In the beginning I had frequency due to the bladder being so irritated and then the pelvic floor muscles going into spasms made the frequency worse. When the bladder irritation calmed down the frequency did too. I still now and then go more than normal but not enough to be on an OAB med on a daily basis. Vesicare also worked for me but left me terribly constipated. I didn't get the constipation with Gelnique.

                Hi Claire:

I am recently diagnosed too and use gelnique and really like it so far. No side effects. I do find that sometimes when I eat watermelon for example, nothing helps the frequency. Also, I am taking Levsin with it if the frequency is bad and I am going out somewhere with my kids for a while. It is a little pill that dissolves under your tongue and works within 30 minutes.
I am never retained on gelnique and can usually hold it for about 2 to 3 hours.

I am interested in trying vesicare but know it has more side effects than gelnique. I have only used in for a few weeks but really like it thus far.

                Good luck.

                Gina
                Tried but failed:
                aloe vera (6 weeks)
                cysto/hydro
                cystoprotek
elmiron (quit because of diarrhea) after one week
restarted gradually and fine now since July 1/2011
gelnique: made me feel like a zombie

                On now:
elmiron: 200 mg twice a day
                levsin: every 4 hours
                ativan: bedtime only
PT for pfd. Amazing for my muscles.

The oxybutynin didn't seem to help my spasms at all. The Detrol LA I am on now doesn't seem to help the spasms either. And the spasms are definitely contributing to the urgency for me - the urine starts filling up in the bladder, irritates it, bladder spasms until I get rid of the irritant (that's just my speculation lol).
Lorazepam helped with spasms, but was far too physically addicting to keep taking it.

I would really, really like to find something that gives relief to this..

When I was first diagnosed with IC I took oxybutynin (Ditropan) XL (extended relief) 15 mgs. It helped immensely for years. After a severe bladder infection caused a several months long flare, my Uro switched me to Enablex 15 mg. I thank God for these types of medications, although I realize that not eveyone is helped by them.
