  • Rectal bleeding on Elmiron

I was just placed on Elmiron earlier this week, so today will be my 5th day of pills. For the past two days, however, I have noticed moderate amounts of blood when i go to the restroom. It is not in my urine, but the other. It is enough to make the toilet bowl water a bright red. I have had hemorrhoidal issues in the past, so a little blood doesn't worry me and is typical actually, but I have never had this much. It is a significant difference. Has anyone had moderate amounts, and not just when you wipe? And if I have to go off of Elmiron, does that mean i want be able to do instills, since those also have heparin?

    Please telephone your doctor.

If it's caused by the elmiron, that doesn't mean you won't be able to do instillations. Heparin doesn't do the same when put in the bladder as it does when it's injected via an IV. Also, not all instillations contain heparin --- there are several other combinations that can be used.

I have been taking Elmiron for 6 days and woke up with blood in my urine and stool. This maybe more common than reported...My uro (who I am not impressed with) thought that is was so rare that the bleeding had to be due to constipation. Elmiron is a blood thinner, so bleeding makes sense. Uhhh
