  • If Elmiron works for me, what can it treat?

What I mean is, if I am currently feeling pain in the penis pretty much all day long every day for about 4 months now, and my stream is very weak and never able to void more than about 4 ounces tops, could Elmiron improve this? If it were to work for me that is?

I understand that Elmiron is meant to help heal the bladder wall so I am assuming this would allow me to hopefully let my bladder fill up more without feeling discomfort and urgency and also create more pressure from higher volume and therefore a stronger stream.

This would of course only be possible if it actually worked for me. I've tried so many things up to this point without much relief. I am willing to give Elmiron a try if my urologist agrees it could help with these symptoms. At this point I am willing to give anything a try. I see many people on here are taking Norco, etc. If this could make me feel better, I would be willing to try that. Unfortunately, opioids are pretty difficult to get written for. I am not an addict, and I know that I have in the past tolerated Norco pretty well after a sinus surgery for a brief period with almost no side effects and didn't crave more than what was prescribed and stopped without any issues. I would much rather be pain free and med free (I have been given benzos for a while and don't like them and take them very sparingly). Unfortunately I'm not pain free after many different trials and therefore am getting very hopeless and more and more uncomfortable as the undiagnosed days keep adding up.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Hey I am somewhat of a newbie myelf with elmiron but even though I am female I know what that "feels" like ... even though I dont have a penis! lol My urethra aches all day sometimes. I am happy to tell you though that I have been on elmiron four months and yes it has helped. Not TONS yet, but I am willing to stay on it for however long I have to. I can hold more in my bladder now than I could before too.!

I didnt try elmiron for a long time as I wanted to NOT take meds,,, anyways I am glad that I eventually tried it. I do believe it will make all the difference once a year or so rolls around.

    Good luck!

    28 yrs old,

I have little to no problems now with my bladder, unless I am very stressed out, I forget to take Elmiron for a few days, or I eat or drink something that I know is a trigger...(i.e) like eating a tomato or drinking tea.... Took a long time to get here, but it IS possible to feel good again I just want people who are new to know that IT CAN get better, and for every one person who is suffering, there are hundreds of others who feel GREAT because they have control of thier IC.

What Works: Tylenol 3's, Pyridium, Elmiron (Going on 4 years now!) HOT showers!!!

Medications/ Vitamins: Elmiron-100mg 4x's daily Tylenol 3's/Advil (flaring) Vitamin D, WILD salmon oil 4x gels in the morning, Women's ONE a DAY multivitamin (the gummy kind doesn't make me flare) and PROBIOTICS!

Elmiron can take six months or more to become effective, but it has given some ICers back their normal lives. I, unfortunately, had severe side effects and can't take it.

        Thanks...

I appreciate the feedback from both of you. I have a uro appt. today. I really hope something good comes out of it. I'm remaining hopeful that there is something out there that will work for me. This is a very tough condition to handle since I'm so used to my immune system clearing everything up pretty quick on it's own.

Elmiron has helped me greatly with all IC symptoms. The last symptom to leave was getting up so often at night and the first to reapear when I had a UTI.
Also, this was the mildest UTI I ever had in my life and I've had many. I would suggest giving it a try.

Hey! That is good news! How long did it take for you to feel better?

I was feeling better by the 3d day of Cipro.I am still getting up 2 to 3 times a night to pee And before the UTI it was only once. I fully expect that to improve again.

I have been on elmiron since april 2004. It has helped my symptoms of frequency and pain. I used to get up a few times in the middle of the night. Now I only get up once and that, too, is infrequent. HOWEVER, elmiron started working for me after NINE MONTHS.. I stuck it out, was frustrated, but right after the 9 month mark I felt better and better. Everyone is different. Some feel better after 3-6months. Others, like me, 6-12 months. I hope it will work for you soon.
