  • Per the AUA, L-arginine and L-citrulline can worsen IC/BPS?

L-arginine and/or L-citrulline are ingredients in Bladdder Ease, Bladder Builder, Bladder Rest, and Cysto Renew.

If you have IC/BPS you SHOULD NOT take Vitamin C, L-arginine and L-citrulline. These drugs can actually make your symptoms worse.

The Best Supplements for Interstitial Cystitis

The idea behind L-Arginine is that increasing blood flow and opening up blood vessels can help clear away some of the inflammation that builds up in the pelvic region with IC. It's one of the only supplements that has been truly evaluated in a published, scientific study specifically for interstitial cystitis. In a double-blind, randomized, controlled study of about fifty patients, 48% reported a significant overall improvement with their symptoms with 1,500 mg daily of L-Arginine. (As a comparison, two similar trials of the prescription drug Elmiron showed only 28% and 32% of patients showed a global benefit.) The group that received the placebo (sugar pill) only reported a 24% improvement. Improvements were noted in pain intensity, pain frequency, and urinary symptoms.

I have IC and am EXTREMELY sensitive and have tried Bladder Ease, Bladder Builder, Bladder Rest. and Cysto Renew and flared from them all . Now I know why. Cystaprotek was the only thing that saved me, and now with their reformulation, it also flares me!!! I called the manufacturer and they think it is a new coloring agent? I had a large inventory of the old formula but will be running out in a week. Have been researching and am wondering if anyone has had luck taking the individual ingredients, Chondroitin Sulfate, Glucosomine, Sodium Hyaloronate, and Rutin by themselves or had them compounded? I'm getting desperate. PLEASE HELP. I don't sleep without my CystaProtek.

It is a frustrating journey. I encounter it frequently. For my MAST cell issue the only H2 Antihistamine that agrees with my stomach my bladder hates. The other H2's have been recalled. As for the individual ingredients that lurk in every supplement/pharmaceutical we have to be vigilant. You're right about considering compounding. Ask your doctor if they can write a script/scripts for you. Alot of our journey is trial and error(lots of error and very much a TRIAL)! Best of luck.

Is the coloring agent in the capsule itself? If so, you might want to try picking up some clear capsules and emptying the contents into those --- or even dumping the contents into a liquid.

Hi Donna and duck8. Not sure about what part/where the new coloring agent may be - wish I had thought to ask that, but someone from a more specialized department is to call me back. I had also thought about opening the capsule, and will probably try that soon. I really appreciate the responses as at this time I'm feeling like someone who has slipped through all the cracks.

If you still have some, is the capsule colored --- you could open one and check to see if the contents are colored.

Well, the trial has begun. I cut the new Cysta Protek open, and it looks similar to the contents of the old ones. So I cut off both ends and sucked it out like a straw (it tastes TERRIBLE!), but if that's what it takes, I'll do it. Bladder seems ok, although I'm still awake - fingers crossed, prayers said, we shall see.

I just hope it works. Maybe if you emptied it into some juice or fruit it would be easier.
