  • Some tips when using baking soda

Of course we know the old trick of taking a teaspoon of baking soda in water after eating something that can flare us. I've found that for me the baking soda works much better if I take the time to stir it and actually let it dissolve in the water completely before I drink it, not just let it float around suspended in the water. If the water is too cold it won't totally dissolve, either. So taking the time to really stir it in room temperature water seems to be what works the best at neutralizing the urine.

Also, if there is any left at the bottom of the glass, make sure to dissolve that, too. Because if you drink down a chunk of that stuff, it will likely give you a really bad stomach ache later. I even read that baking soda can give you ulcers. It seems that if I dissolve all of it well, with nothing left behind, my stomach does much better.

Oh, and one more thing. Sometimes using baking soda water just once doesn't really help my flares. For a bad flare, I sometimes have to drink it twice a day for 2-3 days before I notice improvement.

    Hope those tips help!

Update! Feeling much better these days and no longer on any meds!

Pelvic pain began July 2008. Urinary frequency began in November of 2008. IC Doctor says I'm one of the worst frequency patients he has had.

Things that helped me the most: IC Diet, Elavil (30mg), Elmiron since June '09 (500mg/day).

Previously tried and quit: one series of six instillations, Neurontin, Ditropan, Oxytrol, electric stimulation to the pelvic floor, Desert Harvest Aloe, Cystoprotek and Flomax, Hydroxyzine (50mg), Alesse Birth control (this helped my period flares when my symptoms used to be bad), PTNS (I think this helped).

    Thanks

Thanks for the info. I have been having a lot of bladder pain for about 2 weeks now, worst it's been in a while. They tried increasing my elavil but it did not help, and my doctor recommended 1/4 of a teaspoon of baking soda in an 8 ounce glass of water. They want me to do it 4 times a day throughout this weekend to see if it helps calm down this flare. I hope it does! It's been bad. I have been doing everything they have told me, I just need something to get this under control. It seems like many people have responded to it, so I hope that it helps me so I can get back to work.

          Question

Is it normal for the baking soda and water to cause intense frequency and urgency? It seems my pain has gotten better, but my frequency and urgency has been through the roof? Has that happened with anyone else?
