I have been getting leg cramps at night. It has suggesgted that I do not get enough pottasium. As we know that can cause a flare for IC. Any suggestions for an alternative?

Hi, I've had no problem taking potassium supplements. I tried that first but it didn't really get rid of my terrible foot cramps, mostly night but sometimes really bad ones during the day too. So embarassing to be in such agony in a public place as your trying to stretch your foot out!
But, Vitamin D plays a big role in cramps as well, (and calcium and magnesium) when I would forget to take my multi-vitamin I would get leg cramps and couldn't figure it out until finally it dawned on me it was the vitamin D. Now that I take that every day I hardly get them anymore. (I was already getting lots of calcium, magnesium.)
I don't think vitamin D bothers anyone....Cindi

Please talk with your doctor about your leg pain. A simple blood test will find deficiencies. I do know that potassium deficiency can be serious. I took a prescription potassium supplement for several years with no problem. I now manage to get enough in foods so don't have to take it.

I have suffered leg cramps so bad that once I jumped out of bed so my feet would be on a cold floor (helps sometimes) and took a terrible fall. I was found to be VERY low in Vitamin "D" & "B". I have been on "D" for two months and no cramps. A Doctor told me some time ago to take 1/4 glass of tonic water with Quinne to help stop the cramps at night. I did that just before I went to bed and it worked. That was before I was found to have IC so you must talk with your Doctor before taking anything. I feel your pain! Hope you get help soon. It's scary Hugs, Ziggy
