  • Butterbur anyone???

Just wondering if anyone has tried Butterbur?
I've read some reviews online that people have had great results but they were on the website for the product so I don't trust the reviews...
Did it help at all with urgency and frequency? Did you have any side effects? Any info about it good or bad is helpful! Thanks!

    Symptoms began at age 19.
    Diagnosed at age 27.

My symptoms include pressure, frequency, painful urgency, burning, and low back pain.

I also have IBS, Candida, and Adrenal Fatigue.

I am very diet sensitive. I've known about my IC for over two years now and I'm still trying to figure out what I can and cannot eat.

Having IC can be devastating. It has given me depression, hopelessness, and anxiety that can make every day tasks daunting. My supportive husband, prayer, and my faith in God keep me going each day

I'm not familiar with this one, but a bit of research told me it's coltsfoot. On WebMd there's a precaution about contents I suggest you read.

My herbal book describes it as a cough remedy.

Sorry I don't know any more about it. I would discuss with your physician before taking.

I tried a bottle and it did not help. However, don't worry about the pyrrolizidine which is a toxin that all responsible manufactures remove from the herb. You can check that the herb you buy explicitly states that. Since it has some anti-allergy effects MAYBE there is some subset of IC'ers that would respond. I believe it is mostly used for migraines, like feverfew is. Some herbs have pyrrolizidine in them and I guess people historically used to take the herbs anyway. It probably did not hurt many people because the dosage was too low, but better make sure it just is removed, as I said. Compare how many people have died from herbs, and how many people have died from fda approved drugs.
I got IC in 1970! I was not diagnosed until 1991. I've tried many drugs and therapies but I tend to only resort to drugs when in a flare because when I am not in a flare (from being good on diet), I suffer only from small bladder volume (like about 7 ozs.) and peeing will relieve the discomfort. When I am feeling relatively normal, I say to myself I am glad I am not on a drug. When I am in a flare, I say, why am I not on a drug! I've recently have been trying to solve my connective issue problems in general. I look to diet and herbs mostly unless it gets really bad. I still think there is great hope for each individual finding a path to healing and there are many.

I am getting ready to use it along with cystoprotek. My DOM (doctor of oriental medicine) wants me to try it as well.
Tried Elmiron and the diarrhea was unbearable!

        Keep you posted on it.

        Tried but failed:
        aloe vera (6 weeks)
        cysto/hydro
        cystoprotek
elmiron (quit because of diarrhea) after one week
restarted gradually and fine now since July 1/2011
gelnique: made me feel like a zombie

        On now:
elmiron: 200 mg twice a day
        levsin: every 4 hours
        ativan: bedtime only
PT for pfd. Amazing for my muscles.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and information!

I tried it for a couple of days and it seemed to increse my urgency/frequency
I did read about the toxins that it can have so I don't think it's worth me continuing to try. I was really hoping it could help both my allergies AND my IC.

Just so everyone knows I read that you shouldn't take it if you are allergic to ragweed. I was going to have my husband take it as a natural rememdy for his allergies but he is allergic to ragweed os this is just going in the garbage....

I will add that I just started taking Nettle and that seems to be going really well! My IC has really calmed down after just 3 days of taking it and I think it's helping my allergies too! Wishing I had tried this first!
