  • Marshmallow: capsules, tea leaves, raw root, or liquid extract?

So I'm on the verge of buying a marshmallow root product and was just wondering what everyone has tried and likes best. The most popular forms seem to be capsules, tea leaves (loose or in tea bags), the raw root, and liquid extract.

My first choice would probably be capsules, and my second choice would be tea leaves, but I'm willing to take whatever form works best for the most people. So what do you like, and how do you prepare it?

tea is not too good. I could not finish a cup. I would suggest capsules

I use the liquid extract; about a dropperful in a little water. Tastes pretty awful...

I can't take it in any form --- I'm already on a different diuretic for high blood pressure.

Just wanted to follow this up by mentioning that I've been taking the marshmallow caps, and they're like a miracle herb! The very first day, the burning and cramping were a lot better, and the day after that, they were almost gone. I'd say the marshmallow root decreased my pain by 85-90%! I feel like I have my life back!

Tamara, some people don't tolerate marshmallow root in any form.

I bought a box of Marshmallow Root tea based on good replies I had read about it being another hot drink for IC'ers that I could have.

Tried it, and oddly enough my bladder had stinging for the next hour or 2. Thought it might have been something I ate that day. Tried it again a week later in the morning at work, with nothing in my stomach......and the stinging AGAIN!?

Bummer, cause I wasted money and shipping on a whole box of stinky tea that I can't drink now ...... it really does smell quite bad.

I mix the marshmellow root leaves with peppermint tea leaves and it tastes great and has a soothing effect for me.

Hi, Claire! Sorry for the late reply. I haven't been here in awhile because, to be honest, I'm feeling so good most of the time that IC hasn't been on my mind much.

Anyway, I don't find that marshmallow root gives me an increase in frequency, but I should warn you that frequency has never been a big issue for me. Bladder pain is the problem--burning and cramping. So it may be that it would have that effect on someone who is more prone to frequency.

I'm still doing great on the marshmallow root and can even eat lots of foods on the "bad" list now, including tomatoes! I recommended the caps to someone else I know who has suffered with IC for many years, and they've been helping her, too. So I think it's definitely worth trying.
