  • Gross question, sorry

I don't know how much I've written here about my situation but first let me just tell you all what's been going on since October. Along with the IC pain I have horrible pain when sitting upright. VERY painful urethral spasms after only a few minutes. This makes it practically impossible, even with my pain meds, to do anything except lay down with a heating pad and a frozen water bottle between my legs. Riding in a car is pure agony and the only time I do it is to go to the doctor. Also, since October, I've lost about 15 lbs. I knew I'd been losing weight but didn't know how much until I went to the doctor on Weds. I'm 5'5" and as of Weds I weighed 93 lbs. I sleep in a somewhat upright position due to gastritis. And I also have a very thick tempedic foam pad on my side of the bed.
Now for the gross part. I think I may be getting a bed sore on my lower back, right side. The skin is not broken but it's very irritated and it hurts. I'm not sure how to deal with this. There aren't many other positions I can get into that don't hurt. I've looked at it in the mirror and it's really red. But like I said, the skin is not broken. Does anyone know how to deal with this? I've put lotion, cortisone cream and then Aveeno cream on it and it doesn't seem to be getting better.
Does anyone know what helps this?

You really need to show it to your doctor. It could be anything --- I had a really raw spot on a hip years ago and finally found out that it was caused by a laundry detergent that was supposed to be very good to remove stains.

Thanks Donna. The PA saw it the other day and ran her finger over it but didn't say anything. And of course I was embarrassed to say anything (I know I shouldn't be, but I am) and so I guess it doesn't look as bad as it feels. I've already switched all my laundry stuff to no dye, no fragrance months ago hoping that would help with all these problems. I guess I'll have to ask the doc no matter how I feel about it.
I'm trying to think of why it embarrasses me so much. I think it's because I'm afraid people will think I'm just lazy and want to lay around all the time. Nothing could be further from the truth. I want my life back and I'm SO sick of hurting and pain meds and HAVING to lay down. It's just hard to explain it to people who don't understand. And I guess I'm still afraid doctors won't understand.

Bed sores or pressure ulcers are usually over bony prominences, like your spine, elbows, just above your gluteal fold(butt crack), sit bones. If is is a pressure ulcer the best thing to do is relieve pressure to that area, change positions every two hours and lubricate your skin. Hopefully it will go back to normal in a few days.

Thank you Suzanne. That's right where it is, but only on one side. I started using a gel ice pack on it yesterday and that seems to make it feel better. Plus I'm going to keep putting the Aveeno cream on it and hope it helps. Thank you.

            Katie,
Try to go light on the ice, since ice causes vasoconstriction and you want all the blood flow that is possible to the area. The reason pressure ulcers happen is because blood flow is cut off to that area.

Hi Katie, I'm sorry you're in so much pain

Of course the best thing is to change position every two hours and try to stay off that spot as much as you can. An air mattress may also help.

There is a product called Sensicare protective barrier that we use at the hospital to prevent bed sores. Its a thick cream that should work better than other lotions since it's designed for this. I'm not sure where you can get it besides online, but your pharmacy may be able to order it.

Also, it's important to get good nutrition to help your skin heal and of course the thinner you are the more bony prominences you have which increases your risk of bed sores. If you're having trouble eating right (because of the gastritis or not being hungry from the pain, etc), maybe your doctor could recommend a supplement. I hope they're trying to manage your pain better as well because that would help the whole situation...

I hope this helped. Best of luck!

                Thank you Suzanne and Ashley!!

I switched to heat and I've called my pharmacy and they said they could order that cream. So hopefully it will be here soon. It does seem to be getting better so I'm hoping that everything I'm trying is helping. Thank you so much!!

                  sore

I am confused you said the doctor looked at it, did'nt she explain what it was and how to treat it? I would call her office and ask.

The PA did look at it during my exam but she didn't explain what it was. I know she saw it because she ran her finger over it. So I just figured it wasn't that big of a deal. Then it started really hurting. Since she didn't say anything about it I'm pretty sure there's not even a note of it. And the clinic I go to is great (so far) but SO big that I doubt she would even remember me. It was just my first time there.
Te good news is it's feeling better and hopefully will keep getting better.

Glad to hear your mystery sore is getting better! Just slight positional change is the key (know this from working hospice) and yes, creams help, sometimes the baby stuff for diaper rash is the best. I have the same problem with my tailbone sometimes. I'm thin as well, but not as thin as you are. You need to put on some weight girlfriend! Jill, wife of Bob
